Pioneer Life and Coosa Cheifdom (1560-1800)

​Step back in time and immerse yourself in the world of pioneers and the Coosa Chiefdom! This engaging, hands-on curriculum explores daily life, survival skills, and cultural traditions between 1560 and 1800. Through interactive storytelling, crafts, role-playing, and outdoor activities, students will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and innovations that shaped both Indigenous and pioneer communities. From building pioneer homes and cooking traditional meals to creating pottery inspired by the Napochie people, this program fosters creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while making history come to life.
Students will explore key aspects of pioneer expansion, indigenous influence, and the resilience of early settlers. They will experience daily pioneer chores, school life, and craftsmanship while also discovering the rich history of the Coosa Chiefdom and their role in shaping the region. Activities include shelter building, bartering simulations, woodworking, and even making their own butter. Whether designing pioneer flags, sewing simple textiles, or recreating traditional games, students will leave with a greater appreciation for the past and a hands-on connection to history.

Ancient Art: A Journey Through Time
Step into the world of ancient civilizations and discover how art was used to tell stories, honor deities, and record history. Our Ancient Art program introduces students to the artistic traditions of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Africa, Asia, and Pre-Columbian America. Through hands-on projects, students will explore the architectural wonders of Mesopotamian ziggurats, the intricate hieroglyphics of the Egyptians, the symbolic masks of African cultures, the delicate brushwork of Asian paintings, and the intricate stone carvings of the Aztecs and Maya. Each session is designed to provide an immersive experience, connecting art with the history, beliefs, and traditions of these fascinating cultures.
Students will bring history to life by creating their own cylinder seals, pyramids, rock art, kente cloth weavings, and more, gaining a deeper appreciation for the creativity and craftsmanship of ancient societies. By working with clay, paint, fabric, and natural materials, participants will develop artistic skills while exploring the symbolism, meaning, and cultural significance behind each project. This program fosters creativity, curiosity, and a love for history, making the past tangible and engaging for young learners.
